Which Airport Car Parks are Suitable For Long Stays?

While there are multiple car parks directly at Melbourne Airport, not all accept long term bookings. Melbourne Airport owns and maintains several different parking facilities, from the budget Long Term Car Park and the Value Car Park, to the multi-storey 'At Terminal' Car Parks, Premium and Business Car Parks, and valet services. All of these car parks offer long term rates, meaning that rates are charged per calendar day, not by the hour, and operate on a sliding scale. In general, the daily rate charged over a fortnight long stay will be lower than the daily rate charged for three days of parking.

Not all of these car parks service all terminals, so it's important to check the location of the car park in relation to where your flight is due to depart from. The Long Term Car Park is a viable option for flights departing from Terminals 1, 2, 3, and 4, however the At Terminal T1 T2 T3 Car Park is not suitable for those departing from the Jetstar Terminal. Your options for long term stays over 24 hours include:

  • Value Car Park, an open air economy option, only bookable during Victorian school holiday periods
  • Long Term Car Park, a budget option for longer trips. Includes free 24/7 shuttle service, which runs every 5 minutes
  • At Terminal 123, located opposite Terminals T1 T2 T3 with undercover parking options
  • At Terminal 4, located opposite Terminal 4 with undercover parking options
  • Melbourne Airport Valet, accessible via level 1 of the At Terminal T1 T2 T3 Car Park
  • Virgin Australia Valet, accessible via level 2 of the At Terminal T1 T2 T3 Car Park
  • Premium T123, for quick getaways, located on level 2 of the At Terminal T1 T2 T3 Car Park
  • Premium T4, for quick getaways, located on level 1 of the At Terminal T4 Car Park
  • Business Car Park, located opposite Terminal 1

How Much is Long Term Parking at Melbourne Airport?

Long term parking rates at Melbourne Airport differ according to the service type, proximity to the airport building, stay length, season (peak vs. non peak), capacity, and competition. It’s safe to say that when it comes to long term parking, you'll pay extra for convenience. Both of these car parks are budget options, meaning that you will have to take a shuttle bus onwards to your terminal. If you’d rather leave your car closer to the airport, you can park at the Premium T123, Premium T4, or Business Car Park. Do You Need to Book Parking at Melbourne Airport?

No - it’s not a prerequisite. You can arrive at the Long Term Car Park or the Value Car Park (holiday periods only) on your day of travel and pay drive-in rates. Some off-site car parks near Tullamarine will accept drive-in customers, however most would prefer you to pre-book online.

It is advisable to book in advance, simply as this guarantees you a space. Long term airport car parks can and do sell out, especially during peak travel times. If you’re planning on flying out over the weekend, school holidays, or the Christmas period, reserving a space will save you plenty of time and stress. The cheaper and nearer car parks tend to sell out first, and there's nothing more frustrating than wasting twenty-thirty minutes driving around, looking for a space near the terminal, only to have to retreat to a lot much further away.

Yes - you can save money by booking your parking online! If you’re tired of paying a high price for long term airport parking, you should check online before you arrive, to see if you can get a better deal. You'll find better deals when you check online, and you have the ability to compare various different offers from multiple parking providers.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) recently weighed in on the issue, with the Chairman Rod Sims stating “... the ACCC found that consumers parking at the airports could save up to 66.5 per cent for longer durations by booking online.”

“Consumers should consider all of their options, including whether they could obtain a cheaper rate by booking online or using an off-airport parking operator,” Sims concluded, after the agency issued its annual airport monitoring report.

Flypark’s Airport Car Park Selection Tips

  • Initially, you need to decide how close to the airport you want to be. In general, what sets the more expensive parking options apart from the budget service is their proximity to the terminals. The closer the car park is to the airport, the more costly its rates will be
  • Most off-site car parks near Melbourne Airport offer complimentary shuttle services to and from the terminals, due to the distances involved. On the one hand, this makes them a more economical option, on the other, you do have to factor in the additional time required for the journey
  • Security is important - make sure that the car park has security features such as CCTV cameras and high fencing
  • Read customer reviews. These will give you a good idea of the car park’s reliability and the trustworthiness of its employees
  • Look for the best value. In general, car parks are comparatively cheaper the longer you park for. Given that many have similar pricing structures, keep an eye out for special offers and complimentary extras
  • The additional cost of indoor parking is often worth it when you’re going away for a long time, since your car will be protected from the elements
